Personality & Traits

General Overview Sol is an intelligent, dedicated, well-mannered and meticulous typical Bolian. In or out of uniform he is a chronic “workaholic” performing his duties with precision and efficiency.

He is only truly happy when doing something productive and useful. He has a strong sense of loyalty to his family, friends, and crew as he has an innate affinity for cooperation and group dynamics. If the group succeeds Sol will succeed.
Strengths & Weaknesses Like most members of his species Sol is characterised by his meticulousness. He pays a great deal of attention to the detail and efficiency of the task and enjoys creating order out of chaos. He is methodical and organized and considers the completion of his duties as a matter of honour.

He has a disdain for idiocy and this disdain has left others to deem him as ‘cold’ or ‘unapproachable’. He sees no shame in failing at a task; however, he believes that nothing in the universe is simple and that he can always learn from his mistakes and try again. A trait he attempts to instil in younger crew members.

He values knowledge and enjoys exchanging information, sometimes too much for other species' comfort. He is full of advice even if it is not wanted and if someone ignores or dismisses his advice, that only makes him work harder at learning as much as possible about the subject so that the next time his suggestions might be accepted.

He is however a constant worrier, fearing that his work is not perfect or that he has somehow offended his associates or caused upset. Sol does however conceal his emotions under a hard-working exterior, often believing that if he shows his true emotions others will reject him. As a result, it is often difficult for Sol to form close or lasting relationships with other species.
Ambitions He is career driven focusing on achieving the next assignment and proving to his superiors that he is an exemplary Starfleet Officer. While he never speaks openly about where he wants to end up it is to nobody’s surprise that Sol is a career man, destined for the command chair.
Hobbies & Interests Sol is a scientist by academic training and through this he is a collector. His quarters are filled with often odd, or unique, or rare fossils, geodes, books, and plants which he is more than happy to discuss their origin, backstory, and context with all those who ask.

Sol exercises regularly often by running the length of whatever vessel he is assigned to.

Personal History Childhood & Early Education 2355 - 2373

Sol was born in Autumn of 2355 in Bolrabi, one of three capital cities on the planet Bolarus IX. Sophisticated and multicultural, Sol’s childhood home conveyed function and utility. With the city being built across several small islands on the Rabor Archipelago, with significant portions resting underwater on the reef that surrounds the island chain, the Dexx family home rested within a commune of Sol’s wider family with parts under the surface of the ocean. It was an idyllic setting to grow up in.

Sol is the middle of three children born to his parents, Tan and Rana Dexx. His father, Tan, a Starfleet Engineer assigned to the Starfleet Embassy on Bolarus IX and his Mother, Rana, a civilian hydroponics expert at the Bolian Institute for Aquaculture. Sol’s, his younger brother Sen’s, and older sister Salla’s childhoods were certainly not stellar by any means, the children of a serving Starfleet officer and active scientist often meant that Sol and his siblings had to ‘entertain’ themselves.

At the age of 17, with support from his sister Salla who had already enrolled at Starfleet Academy, he undertook the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Programme. This six-week course instilled a strong sense of duty and commitment to the ideals of Starfleet and the Federation and by the age of 18 he relocated to Earth to begin his Starfleet Career.

Starfleet Academy 2373 – 2377

Sol enrolled at the Academy just as the Dominion War broke out, whilst older cadets found themselves being drafted into active duty perhaps sooner than they were ready, Sol being a first year cadet was fortunate that the war did not impact on his studies.

He was by no means immune to the war effort, many of his lecturers had been drafted back into active duty, and most of the third and fourth year cadets were rushed through graduation and into active duty and so Sol and his classmates had to step up by completing many of the duties of the older cadets.

His sister Salla, who had joined Starfleet Medical 2 years before Sol, was assigned to the USS Hope as a Medical Cadet and his father was also reassigned to the USS Kent protecting the Bolian front. During the Dominion War, the Bolian sector was a hotbed of military activity. By 2374 the 6th Fleet was deployed there as a solid front against a rapid Dominion incursion into Federation territory. This was to be his father’s final posting as the USS Kent was destroyed by Dominion Forces.

Sol’s Academy experience was tainted by the Dominion War. There were four years of ups and downs, but overall, Sol felt he had completed his training well. Specialising in the sciences, Sol had a particular affinity to Archaeology, palaeontology and exobiology. He was fascinated by Earth’s prehistoric history as much of his home worlds native wildlife had been made extinct by over industrialisation, he had a hoped that one day we would discover ancient prehistoric life under his oceanic home.

2377-2381 USS Lyell

In 2377 Sol graduated the Academy and was commissioned Ensign. His first assignment was to the USS Lyell as a junior Science Officer. Sol was somewhat disappointed by being assigned to what he viewed as ‘rust bucket’ Oberth class which was considerably older than most of the crew however he kept these views to himself. He spent four long years running scans on passing meteorites as the small starship had been tasked with exploration of a large swath of sectors near Orpheus II. Stellar cartography was not one of Sol’s fortes however he applied himself to the best of his ability.

He was relived we he was reassigned. At first, Sol questioned if had done something wrong or if his superiors were unsatisfied with his performance, however two months after his transfer off the USS Lyell the ship was decommissioned his former captain had not said anything to the crew about this, instead he attempted to find each crewmember an assignment that he knew they would thrive in and he was right.

2381 – 2386 USS Buckland

The USS Buckland was a fresh out the stardock Nova class. The Oberth’s natural replacement this ship had it all for the budding scientists. More laboratories than quarters, no nonsense, no thrills just the pursuit of knowledge. Sol was assigned to the Planetary Sciences division under the watchful eye of Dr Elizabeth Young, a fantastic scientist who saw potential in the young Bolian ensign. She quickly assigned him to all things archaeological and palaeontological, recognising his passion and talent for what she called “old broken things”. The Buckland, like the Lyell was assigned to planetary survey work often spending months if not years in orbit around a planet.
In 2383 Sol he and Dr Young became trapped inside a cave on the planet Dren V after examining composite ore deposits. Dr Young had seriously damaged her right tendon in a landslide and Sol being the duty bound Bolian he is, carried her on his back 5km to reach the planet’s surface. Despite his objection, stating he was merely doing his duty, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Sol still disputes his worthiness of this promotion, but he did enjoy the larger quarters that came with it.

2386 – 2389 – USS Ostrom

His time on the Buckland came to an abrupt end in 2386 when he was assigned to the USS Ostrom, the Buckland had become his home and family and he was somewhat disappointed when Starfleet requested, he transferred. The USS Ostrom, an Intrepid class starship assigned to Diplomatic duties along the Romulan border as had many starships in those days. Tensions between the Federation and the Romulans had been on the increase and Sol soon found his scientific days behind him. Sol was assigned to the Bridge, his first posting as a serving bridge officer and he rather enjoyed being at the heart of the action. His commanding officer, Captain T’Val a stern Vulcan was impressed by Sols dedication to his duties.

Although the Ostrom was not involved in the evacuation planning of Romulus he followed events with a keen eye, often discussing with colleagues the need to protect the prehistoric and ancient Romulan artefacts on the planets surface. In 2387 the Hobus disaster resulted in the destruction of Romulus, and like so many Starfleet officers, Sol felt a certain sense of failure.

The Federation was changing around him and so many officers resigned their commissions in protest at Starfleet’s failure to act. In 2388 he attempted the Command Bridge Officer test, feeling he was ready for rapid promotion to Commander and given the number of vacancies occurring he felt he was in with a good chance. While Bolian’s do not think badly of failure, this was a sense check for Sol that he was not quite as ready for the command chair as he had thought he was.

2389 – 2396 – USS Mary Anning

Sol served for another year on the Ostrom under Captain T’Val, she encouraged him to explore his Command potential further, something in which he had not aspired to before preferring to perform his scientific and bridge duties to the best of his ability. She often assigned him extra-curricular reading, Command academy course literature, holodeck training and mentoring sessions and whether this was out of a desire to see him succeed or a need to quickly replace and increase the number of Commanders after the Hobus exodus Sol never refused the additional help.

In 2389 Sol was offered a position on the USS Mary Anning, an ageing New Orleans class that had need for a Second Officer and Assistant Chief Science Officer. Sol under advice and blessings from Captain T’Val accepted and joined the Mary Anning at Starbase 5.

It was during his time on the Mary Anning that Sol finally accepted his sexuality, while its not uncommon for Bolian’s to be pansexual with many living in extended families with co-spouses, it is quite rare for a Bolian to limit himself to just one gender. Sol up to this point had no interest in the opposite sex, Bolian or non Bolian, instead focusing on his career and performing his duties. Now into his late 30’s he began to question what he wanted from life.
In 2392 he was promoted to Lieutenant in response to his commitment to his duties and his crew. Sol at this point had taken on a range of the responsibilities from the First Officer who was somewhat lacklustre in his commitment.

In 2395 Sol attempted the Bridge Command Officers test again under the supervision of his Commanding officer. His second attempt was much more successful than his first. Sol passed with a Merit grade impressing not only his Commanding Officer but also several external moderators from the Command Academy.

Fearing for his job the First Officer of the Mary Anning quickly requested Sol to be transferred to the next available First Officer vacancy and in 2396 the opportunity to join the USS Tesla was presented to Sol.
